2022년 17번째 책, Benedict Anderson의 Imagined Communities (1983)

베네딕트 앤더슨(Benedict Anderson)의 대표작으로는 '민족'을 근대 이후의 정치적 필요에 의해 구성된 '상상의 공동체'라고 규정한 <상상의 공동체: 민족주의의 기원과 전파에 대한 성찰>(1983)가 있다.
"많은 국가들이 민족의 이름으로 삶을 영위하면서도 민족, 민족성, 민족주의 같은 말은 정의조차 힘들다"는 게 앤더슨의 문제의식이다. <상상의 공동체>에서 그는 지난 3세기간 세계에 민족주의(nationalism)이 출현하게 된 요인들을 유물사관 혹은 마르크스주의 사관에서 접근하여 분석하였다.
민족은 상상된 정치 공동체, 다시 말해 본래부터 제한적이면서 동시에 주권을 지닌 것으로 상상된 정치 공동체이다. 민족은 가장 작은 민족의 성원들조차 대부분의 자기 동료 구성원들을 알지 못하고 만나지 못하며 심지어 그들에 관한 이야기를 듣지도 못할 것이지만, 구성원 각자의 마음에 서로 친교의 이미지가 살아 있기 때문에 ‘상상된다.’ 상상된 민족은 다음 세 가지 조건을 가진다.
1) 민족은 ‘제한적인 것(limited)’으로 상상된다. 왜냐하면 10억의 인구를 가진 가장 큰 민족도 비록 유동적이기는 하지만 한정된 경계를 가지고 있어 그 너머에는 다른 민족이 살고 있기 때문이다. 어떤 민족도 그 자신을 인류와 동일시하지 않는다.
2) 민족은 '주권을 가진 것(sovereign)'으로 상상된다. 왜냐하면 계몽사상과 (프랑스) 혁명이 신이 정한 위계적 왕국의 합법성을 무너뜨리던 시대에 그 개념이 태어났기 때문이다. 민족들은 어떤 보편적인 종교의 가장 신앙심 깊은 추종자조차도 그러한 종교들의 생생한 ‘다원성(복수성)’ 그리고 각 신앙의 존재론적 주장과 영토적 한계 사이의 동질 이형에 직면할 수밖에 없는 그러한 인간 역사의 단계에 성숙해지기 때문에, 자유롭기를 꿈꾸며 신의 지배 하에서라도 곧장 그렇게 되기를 꿈꾼다. 이 자유의 표식과 상징이 주권 국가이다.
3) 민족은 '공동체(community)'로 상상된다. 왜냐하면 각 민족에 보편화되어 있을지 모르는 실질적인 불평등과 수탈에도 불구하고 민족은 언제나 심오한 수평적 동료의식으로 상상되기 때문이다. 궁극적으로 지난 2세기 동안 수백만의 사람들로 하여금 남을 죽이기보다 그렇게 제한된 상상체들을 위해 스스로 기꺼이 죽게 만들 수 있었던 것은 이 형제애이다.
<상상의 공동체>는 민족주의 등장이 자본주의적 발전과 밀접한 관계가 있다고 진단했다. 특히 "인쇄 자본주의(print capitalism)"의 발달에 주목했다. "인쇄기술 발달로 인해 대중적 언어에 기반한 출판산업이 번성하면서 사람들의 이성과 세계관이 동질화되고 민족 개념이 촉진됐다"는 해석이다.
저자 소개
저자 베네딕트 앤더슨은 중국 윈난(雲南) 성의 쿤밍(昆明)에서 영국계 아일랜드인 아버지와 잉글랜드인 어머니 사이에 태어났다. 어린 시절 대부분을 베트남인 보모의 손에 자랐으며, 1941년 앤더슨 가족은 미국 캘리포니아로 이주했다. 1957년 영국 케임브리지 대학을 졸업했으며, 1967년 미국 코넬 대학에서 인도네시아 역사에 관한 연구로 박사학위를 받았다. 1967년부터 코넬 대학에서 정치학과 동남아시아학을 가르쳤으며, 2002년 은퇴하여 현재는 코넬 대학교 명예교수로 있다. 그와 더불어 세계적인 학자로 잘 알려진 페리 앤더슨(Perry Anderson)은 그의 친동생이기도 하다.
