스탠포드 대학교에서는 2012년 이래 매년 한국학 관련 우수작을 선정해 상을 수여하고 있다.
작년 상반기에 2015년부터 2017년 수상작을 읽어보려고 출력해놓고 부분적으로 훑어만 보고 책장에 고이 넣어놨다. 그러다가 최근 이사하면서 짐이 너무 많아서 빨리 읽고 정리하기로 했다.
Korea Program Prize for Writing in Korean Studies 개요
The Korea Program Prize for Writing in Korean Studies recognizes and rewards outstanding examples of writing in an essay, term paper, or thesis produced during the current academic year in any discipline within the area of Korean Studies, broadly defined. This competition is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. The prize will be awarded at a special ceremony in the fall and the first place winner will receive a certificate and $1,000; Honorable Mention winner(s) will receive a certificate.
Application Deadline: 5:00 p.m., May 31 annually
Eligible Students: All currently-enrolled Stanford students
Application Instructions: Submit the following items by email to John Groschwitz, CEAS Associate Director:
- Current CV
- One Korean Studies paper/essay (minimum 20 pages double-spaced, Times 12pt., 1″ margins)
- One recommendation letter from a Stanford professor (emailed by the professor directly to CEAS)

한줄평
2015년 수상작: 많은 학자들이 주장하는 Developmental state -> Export-led industralization (ELI)의 순서가 아닌 ELI -> Developmental state의 순서를 주장하는 것이 흥미로웠다. 다만 이를 뒷받침하기 위해 초기 경제개발 정책을 언급하는 부분에 있어서 조금 더 구체적인 설명이 있었으면 좋았을 것 같다.
2016년 수상작: 일본 식민주의의 Environmental History에 대한 초점을 중심으로 압록강 주변의 계절의 변화와 그의 영향에 대해서 분석한 것이 색다르게 느껴졌다. 댐이 건설되면서 압록강 하부가 더이상 얼지 않았다는 점도 흥미로운 부분이었다.
2017년 수상작: 한반도의 신탁 통치에 대해 의논하기 위해 열린 미·소 공동 위원회를 분석한 글으로, 두 나라가 결국 의견차를 좁히지 못했지만 협상 초기에 소련이 미국에게 적대적이지 않았던 시점이 있었음을 강조한다. 이와 관련, 신탁통치 협상 초기에 소련 및 북한내 기근이 치명적인 문제였음을 분석하며, 소련이 북한을 통치하는 것이 우리가 알고 있는 것처럼 수월하지만은 않았다고 주장한다.
