[독서] Charles Holcombe의 A History of East Asia: From the Origins of Civilization to the 21st Century

 

2022년 13번째 책, Charles Holcombe, A History of East Asia: from the Origins of Civilization to the Twenty-First Century

(2022년 6월 24일~7월 2일)

이 책은 9월에 진학하게 될 미국 대학원에서 1학년 1학기에 들어야 하는 필수 과목 교과서이다. 예습하려고 미리 구매했는데 학교에서 수업 첫 날 전까지 읽어오라는 메일을 받고 예습이 기본으로 요구되는구나 싶었다.

2017년에 출판된 책으로 총 470페이지에 달하며, 대부분의 역사 서적이 그렇듯 연대순, 국가별로 정리되어 있다.

 

저자 소개

Professor Holcombe’s research interests focus around China’s great age of division between the Han and Tang dynasties, and the formation of an East Asian cultural community. He is the author of three books, most recently A History of East Asia: From the Origins of Civilization to the Twenty-First Century(2011). He is a recipient of the Iowa Regent’s Award for Faculty Excellence.

주요 요점 정리

저자는 'What is East Asia? 동아시아란 무엇인가?'라는 가장 근본적인 질문을 물으며 시작한다. 우리가 흔히 생각하는 한국, 중국, 일본으로 이뤄진 동아시아라는 지역의 개념이 무엇인지를 묻는 중요한 질문이다.

※ 그들을 '동아시아'라는 하나의 거대한 카테고리로 묶을 수 있는 공통 분모란 무엇인가? 그 공통점은 시공간을 초월할 수 있는가?

저자가 서두에서 강조하는 것은 전통적인 동아시아가 정적이고 불변하는 것과는 거리가 멀었다는 것이다. 역사는 변화에 관한 것이며 동아시아 지역도 타지역과 같이 많은 변화를 겪었다고 주장한다.

What the writer emphsizes in the book is that traditoinal East Asia was far from being static and unchanging: "It should be emphasized that no 'civilization' is a permanently fixed conerete reality. What we call civilizations are merely abstractions that people imagine around certain historical continuties and agglomerations that seem to us to be significant. Borders are always permeable, all cultures interact and exchange both artifacts and ideas, and multiple nested layers or distinction can be discerned everywhere within what is ultimately a single global human community." - p. 5

He concludes by arguing that "history is all about change, and East Asia has experienced as much change as almost any comparable region." - p. 11

책을 읽다보니 학부 1학년 때 전공 과목을 들으며 열심히 공부했던 내용들이 새록새록 떠올랐다. 이번 4월에 한국사능력검정시험을 응시해서 그런지 한국사 부분도 수월하게 읽혔다.

 

대부분의 동아시아 관련 책이 그렇듯 중국사가 많은 비중을 차지하고 있다. 한가지 흥미로운 점은 베트남도 동아시아에 포함해 놓았다는 점이다. 이와 관련한 논쟁에 대해서는 저자가 358쪽에서 설명하고 있다.
