[GRE] 3편: 논술(라이팅) 과목, 미국 대학원 진학/입시 시험 알아보기!

1편에서 설명한 바와 같이 라이팅은 최저점 0, 최고점 6이며 한 구간당 0.5점으로 채점된다. 라이팅은 Issue 에세이와 Argument 에세이로 분류되며, 각 에세이당 30분이 주어진다. 라이팅이 타 과목과 다른 점은 각 에세이별 질문과 Task가 모두 공개되어 있다는 점이다. 다만 문제는 Argue의 경우 약 170여 개의 지문이, Issue의 경우 약 150여 개의 지문이 있다는 점이다. 현실적으로 이 많은 지문을 하나하나 다 공부하기는 쉽지 않다. 따라서 단기간에 GRE를 졸업하기 위해서는 여러 가지 라이팅 전략이 필요하다.

 

잠깐만요, Issue 에세이는 뭐고 Argument 에세이는 뭔가요?

* Issue 에세이: 주어진 주제에 대해 본인의 의견(Agree and/or Disagree)을 4~6문단으로 작성하고 여러 가지 예시를 통해 확립된 자신의 주장을 뒷받침하는 시험이다. 따라서 지문에 대한 배경지식이 있는 것이 중요하다. 아래 예시를 보자.

 

Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study. (대학은 모든 학생들이 학생들의 전공 외에 다양한 수업 과정을 듣도록 요구해야 한다.)

▶ Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.

* Argue 에세이: 하나의 긴 지문을 읽고 분석해 저자의 최소 3가지 논리적인 실수를 찾아야 하는 시험으로, 4~6문단으로 저자의 잘못된 논리적 흐름을 제시하고 반박해야 한다.

Argue 에세이에서 특히 주의해야 할 부분은 각 지문마다 주어진 Task가 다르다는 점이다. 즉, 비슷한 지문이어도 응시자에게 작성하라고 요구하는 포인트가 다르기 때문에 이를 주의해서 작성해야 한다. 아무리 열심히 써도 주어진 Task와 맞지 않는다면 off-topic으로 채점돼 낮은 점수를 받게 되기 때문이다.

예시로 아래 Happy Pancake House 빈출 문제를 보자. 시간이 없으면 초록색으로 표기한 부분만 읽고 비교해도 된다.

# 1. The following memorandum is from the business manager of Happy Pancake House restaurants.

"Butter has now been replaced by margarine in Happy Pancake House restaurants throughout the southwestern United States. Only about 2 percent of customers have complained, indicating that 98 people out of 100 are happy with the change. Furthermore, many servers have reported that a number of customers who ask for butter do not complain when they are given margarine instead. Clearly, either these customers cannot distinguish butter from margarine or they use the term 'butter' to refer to either butter or margarine. Thus, to avoid the expense of purchasing butter and to increase profitability, the Happy Pancake House should extend this cost-saving change to its restaurants in the southeast and northeast as well."

▶ Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.

"Butter has now been replaced by margarine in Happy Pancake House restaurants throughout the southwestern United States. Only about 2 percent of customers have filed a formal complaint, indicating that an average of 98 people out of 100 are happy with the change. Furthermore, many servers have reported that a number of customers who ask for butter do not complain when they are given margarine instead. Clearly, either these customers cannot distinguish butter from margarine or they use the term 'butter' to refer to either butter or margarine. Thus, to avoid the expense of purchasing butter, the Happy Pancake House should extend this cost-saving change to its restaurants throughout the rest of the country."

Thus, we predict that Happy Pancake House will be able to increase profits dramatically if we extend this cost-saving change to all our restaurants in the southeast and northeast as well."

Furthermore, many servers have reported that a number of customers who ask for butter do not complain when they are given margarine instead. Clearly, either these customers do not distinguish butter from margarine or they use the term 'butter' to refer to either butter or margarine."

▶ Write a response in which you discuss one or more alternative explanations that could rival the proposed explanation and explain how your explanation(s) can plausibly account for the facts presented in the argument.

 

라이팅의 기초는 뭘까요?

1. 어휘와 문법

- 1편에서 언급한 바와 같이 GRE는 영어를 모국어로 하는 원어민들도 대상으로 하는 대학원 수학 자격시험이기 때문에 기본적으로 어색한 어휘를 사용하거나 문법이 부족하면 고득점을 받기 어렵다. 따라서 다양한 GRE 어휘를 사용할 뿐만 아니라 원어민들이 자주 사용하는 자연스러운 표현들을 문맥에 맞게 사용하는 법도 공부하자.

​

2. 꾸준한 연습

- 영어로 30분 만에 지문을 분석하고 본인의 생각을 자유롭게 표현하기는 어렵다. 따라서 계속해서 지문을 보고 시간에 맞춰 쓰는 연습을 해야 한다. 처음에는 시간제한 없이 작성하고, 익숙해지면 30분의 시간제한을 두고 연습하는 걸 추천한다.

​

3. 브레인스토밍 및 아웃라인 구성

- 시간이 없다 보면 마음이 급해지기 마련이다. 그렇다고 브레인스토밍이나 아웃라인 구성 없이 에세이를 쓰다 보면 중간에 흐름이 자연스러워지지 않거나 처음부터 글을 다시 작성해야 하는 경우가 발생할 수 있다. 따라서 첫 2분 정도는 브레인스토밍을 하고 아웃라인을 구성하는 것이 중요하다.

4. 샘플 에세이 분석

- ETS 웹사이트나 인터넷을 조금만 검색해 보면 샘플 에세이들을 쉽게 찾을 수 있다. 고득점과 저득점 에세이를 대조해 보며 어떤 부분을 개선하면 좋을지 고민해 봐야 한다.

5. 첨삭과 수정

- 에세이를 작성한 뒤 지속적인 첨삭과 수정을 통해 본인의 부족한 부분을 분석하고 개선해 나아가야 한다. 시간제한을 신경 쓰다 보면 마음이 급해지고 실수를 가능성이 높다. 계속 첨삭하다 보면 반복되는 실수나 부족한 부분이 보일 것이다.

 

단기간에 끝내고 싶은데 라이팅 주요 전략은 어떤 게 있을까요?

개인적으로는 여러 가지 전략이 있다고 생각한다. Issue 에세이의 경우 본인의 주장을 뒷받침해 줄 수 있는 예시가 중요하기 때문에 배경지식을 키울 수 있는 습관을 기르고 실제 답변에 인용해야 높은 점수를 기대할 수 있다. 그러나 Issue 에세이의 질문은 너무 다양하고 카테고리가 많기 때문에 여러 지문에 사용할 수 있는 공통적인 예시를 공부하는 것도 하나의 전략이다. 또한 고득점을 위해서는 한 쪽의 의견만이 아닌 찬반 입장 모두를 고려하는 것이 좋다. 마지막으로 라이팅 빈출 문제를 위주로 먼저 연습해 보는 것을 추천한다.
